We took a two and a half hour"Gaudi" walking tour with an excellent guide who told us about the architect's life and showed us examples of the buildings he designed. It was a beautiful day, the guide was articulate and engaging, and the other tourists were English speakers from all over the world.
For dinner we returned to the restaurant we enjoyed the first night and we just ordered the same meal. My new favorite is a fried egg on top of fried potatoes and this one included peppers and pork loin.
A walk through a very large grocery store to buy bottled water surprised us with the size and selection of pork haunches. We are seeing these everywhere.
Today we took a second walking tour with the same company and the same guide. Today's tour was the historic quarter of Barcelona. Our guide helped us to understand the context of specific events that took place in this part of the world, including the royal alliances and wars, the treatment of Jews (a hundred years before the Inquisition), and the social, political, and economic trends that surrounded the Spanish Civil War. Did you know that some of the Republicans (good guys) who fled Spain after Franco came to power went to France where they became part of the French Resistance?
Since I am trying to limit the amount of gluten, sugar, and dairy I'm eating, snacking is somewhat difficult while sightseeing. Luckily, this little place appeared at exactly the right time this afternoon.
